What are the safety properties of polyurethane materials

Polyurethane insulation materials occupy an important position in the field of building energy-saving materials because of the following properties:

1. Low density, low thermal conductivity and wide application temperature

  Normally, the density of rigid polyurethane foam is 30-50kg/m3 which is similar to other foam insulation materials, such as EPS board, XPS board and phenolic resin foam board. However, when reach to the same thermal insulation performance, the rigid polyurethane foam is significantly lighter than other foam materials which means that it is easier to transport and install.

  Compared with other thermal insulation materials, rigid polyurethane foam has very excellent thermal insulation properties, that is, in order to achieve the same thermal insulation performance, rigid polyurethane foam is thinner than other materials: you can make a comparison,the thermal insulation performance of 3cm thick polyurethane board is equivalent to 4cm thick XPS board and 5cm thick EPS board. It can be said that the application of rigid polyurethane foam saves considerable space which is very cost-effective in areas where the insulation board is included in the building volume ratio. In addition, the temperature application range of rigid polyurethane foam is very wide: from -200 to 100 .

2. High strength

Rigid polyurethane foam has high compressive strength, adhesion and shear strength which means that it can resist rolling and wind force, while other materials such as glass wool materials are not able to make it. The problems of settlement and thinning of the rock wool insulation material will cause the U value to decrease by 10% to 20%. Therefore, materials like glass wool cannot be directly applied to thin plastered walls, while rock wool, EPS boards, etc. these cannot be directly applied to pressure-resistant roofs and ground insulation. The inherent strength of the polyurethane material itself can be further strengthened by using a metal veneer to form a composite structure.

3. Low moisture absorption and air tightness

  Rigid foam polyurethane foam also has low moisture absorption property which means that it has a longer life than other thermal insulation materials (such as glass wool),which can be more effectively to exert its excellent thermal insulation performance. Studies have shown that U value (a parameter to measure the insulation effect) will be reduced by 86% when the glass wool insulation material absorbs 1% of water.

4. Good fire performance

  By adjusting the formula, the rigid foam polyurethane material can meet the requirements of various domestic and international standards. It will not have the phenomenon of melting and dripping like EPS or XPS materials, and the rigid foam polyurethane material will form a scorched protective layer during the combustion process to inhibit the spread of combustion. In addition, metal veneer can further enhance its flame retardant properties. The performance of polystyrene foam in a fire is not that good, it will soften at 74°C and melt at about 96°C. Using polystyrene foam as the insulation material, since its softening point and melting point are very close to the temperature of the wall and roof, the thermal insulation performance of the foam will decline with time.
